DIY Farmers Market Sign

When we moved into our new house in January, one of the first things I wanted to do was make a Farmers Market sign.  Call me crazy, but I've always envisioned my dream kitchen with a Market sign.  I've got big plans for our little kitchen...DIY island, subway tile,...etc.  but for now I'm just happy I got this tiny little piece done.  Do you want one too?  Well print off the template HERE and I'll show you how I did it.

First off, I begged and pleaded my husband to pick me up a board at Home Depot.  One of these days I'll be brave enough to walk in there myself.  Anyways, he grabbed me one and he said it was about $6.  I measured our kitchen window and had him cut it for me so that it was the exact width of the window.  I then painted it white using Americana Decor Chalk paint in Everlasting.  I don't know much about chalk paint yet but this stuff does a good enough job.  I also used it on a bookshelf (see it HERE).  Really want to get my hands on some Annie Sloan chalk paint sometime though.

After the paint was dry, I printed off my template and rubbed chalk on the back.  I then cut out the pieces and positioned it how I wanted it and taped it down.  Then I used a pen and pushed hard on the paper and traced the letters so that the chalk left an imprint on the wood.  If you don't know about this trick it'll change your life.  PS. don't worry I got rid of the apostrophe.

Once I had my outline, I started painting the letters with black paint.  Don't worry too much about making it perfect. You can always clean it up with the white paint and honestly a few mistakes make it more rustic in my opinion.  Notice the "Market" isn't completely straight for example... I grew to love it though.  I think it gives it character.  Once I got it all painted, I sanded the edges and dipped a paper towel in Minwax Dark Walnut stain and rubbed it on the edges and corners.

Then it was finally done!  And then it sat and sat and sat until I finally threatened to have my dad help me hang it and then it was up on the wall haha.  OK, that sounds bad but my hubby is really the bomb and I'm kinda obsessed with him.  I really just need to learn how to use power tools.

What do you think?  Not too bad right?  One project down! I'd love for you to follow along with me!  Find me on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.   Happy crafting friends!
